From Microneedling to Chemical Peels: 2018’s Top Skincare Treatments

June 4, 2018

Skincare is a huge beauty segment. From products like moisturizers and cleansers to services like facials and peels, there are so many ways to tackle acne, wrinkles, and more. So where should you start? Well, I’d recommend building a healthy skincare routine for your day-to-day maintenance, as well as adding monthly skincare treatments in for deeper issues. Let’s take a look at some of the most common ones.

To understand where you should dive in first, here is the scale I use when talking with potential clients.

HydraFacial vs. Microneedling

HydraFacial is the lightest skin service that I perform on a monthly schedule for skin maintenance. Many people also love using it to clean and hydrate the skin for a vibrant glow before events like holiday parties and weddings. It is not a “treatment” for skin conditions like scars, because it penetrates less deep than other MedSpa services.

Microneedling is a good treatment for light scars and other skin conditions. It induces mini-injuries to the skin to stimulate collagen for improved texture, smaller pore size, smoother skin and decreased appearance of scars (especially acne scars).

HydraFacial vs. Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are stronger than HydraFacials, because they penetrate deeper into the skin. Our Vi Peels safely remove your damaged outer layer of skin and promote collagen regrowth. They are perfect for acne, acne scars, pigmented lesions, and large pores. Our peels typically require a few days of downtime as your damaged skin flakes off. Our newest, lightest peel doesn’t have any flaking – or downtime!

To maintain your skin health, we recommend HydraFacials between peels.

Dermal Rolling vs. Microneedling

Dermal rolling is gaining popularity as an at-home skincare treatment that uses a roller with needles to create injuries in your skin. But it is a very limited – and sometimes dangerous – skincare treatment because the rollers that are legally sold in the US have very short needles. This means they can’t penetrate past the top layer of the skin as you roll it across your body, which limits your results. Plus, if your roller isn’t properly sterilized or your skin isn’t clean, you can actually transfer harmful bacteria into your skin. This can make your acne worse, trigger other skin conditions, and even cause minor scarring.

Microneedling uses a pen with a tip of needles that pulse up and down – you can view it in this short video. It is a safer, more effective skincare treatment because Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, and Medical Doctors can use it. These needles are longer and can pulse into the second layer of the skin where the collagen is.

BBL Acne vs. Chemical Peels

BBL Acne (broadband light) has no downtime and uses pulsed light waves to kill acne causing bacteria, decrease redness with breakouts, and heal acne scars.

Our lightest chemical peel has no downtime, while our deeper ones have 3-7 days of downtime. All levels of our peels work by eliminating the bacteria inside the pores and stimulating collagen to decrease pore size, calm breakouts, and heal scars.

BBL Hair Removal vs. Laser Hair Removal

BBL Hair Removal (broadband light) is similar to laser hair removal. The biggest difference is that BBL uses light wave technology at a lower energy with multiple pulses. This makes the treatment far more comfortable and effective than laser hair removal. The handpiece is also larger, decreasing the chance of missing hairs. I go into more detail on these two treatments in this short video.
