A Guide on How to Properly Wash Your Face

A Guide on How to Properly Wash Your Face

Posted: March 23, 2026

There are countless opinions about the “right” way to wash your face. Some people swear by a 10-step routine, while others insist you shouldn’t use a cleanser at all. The best daily face washing routine depends on your skin type, lifestyle, and personal preferences.

In this guide, we’ll walk through the essential skin care routine steps, explain what each step does for your skin, and why it is important.

Why Washing Your Face Matters

Your skin is exposed to sweat, oil, pollution, bacteria, sunscreen, and makeup throughout the day. Even while you sleep, your skin produces oil and sheds dead skin cells.

Proper cleansing helps:

  • Remove dirt, oil, and buildup
  • Prevent clogged pores
  • Support a healthy skin barrier
  • Improve absorption of skincare products
  • Reduce breakouts and irritation

Skipping cleansing altogether can lead to congestion and dullness. Although over-cleansing can damage/strip your skin barrier.

What are the Essential Steps to Washing Your Face?

Washing your face only requires a few fundamental steps. Everything else is optional and is based on your skin type.

Step 1: Wash your Hands

Before touching your face, wash your hands. This prevents transferring bacteria and dirt onto freshly cleansed skin.

Step 2: Remove Makeup (If Applicable)

If you wear makeup or heavy sunscreen, start with a makeup remover, miscellaneous water, cleansing balm or oil cleanser.

What this step does:

  • Removes sweat, excess oil, and debris
  • Clears pores
  • Refreshes the skin

**Avoid harsh scrubbing. Your fingers are enough, and abrasive tools can irritate the skin.

Step 3: Rinse with Lukewarm Water

Hot water can strip natural oils and damage the skin barrier. Cold water doesn’t cleanse effectively.

Step 4: Pat Dry (Don’t Rub)

Use a clean soft towel and gently pat your face dry. Rubbing can cause irritation and micro tears in the skin. One of my favorite towels to use is the Clean Skin Club disposable face towels.

Morning Face Washing Steps vs. Nighttime Face Washing Steps

Morning Face Washing Steps

In the morning, your skin mainly has oil and sweat buildup from overnight.

A simple routine works well:

1. Gentle Cleanser

2. Pat Dry

3. Apply Moisturizer

4. Finish with Sunscreen

Morning cleansing prepares your skin for the day and helps remove excess oil from overnight production.

Nighttime Face Washing Steps

Evening cleansing is more important because your skin has accumulated:

  • Pollution
  • Dirt
  • Sweat
  • Sunscreen
  • Makeup

Night Routine example:

1. Remove makeup (if worn)

2. Cleanse (double cleanse if needed)

3. Apply treatment products (optional)

4. Moisturize

Cleansing properly at night helps prevent clogged pores and breakouts.

How many Steps Should There Be To Wash Your Face?

There’s no magic number.

For most people, 3-5 steps are enough:

  • Remove Makeup
  • Cleanse
  • Dry
  • Moisturize
  • Protect (SPF in the morning)

More Steps aren’t necessarily better. Overcomplicating your routine can irritate your skin and weaken your barrier.

The goal is clean, balanced skin. Not squeaky, tight skin.

Identifying Your Skin Type

Before customizing your routine, determine your skin type. Here’s a simple guide:

Dry Skin

  • Feels tight after washing
  • Flaky or rough texture
  • Dull appearance

Oily Skin

  • Shiny throughout the day
  • Enlarged Pores
  • Frequent breakouts

Combination Skin

  • -Oily in the T-Zone (forehead, nose, chin)
  • -Dry or normal cheeks

Acne-Prone Skin

  • Frequent blackheads, whiteheads, or inflamed breakouts

Sensitive Skin

  • Easily irritated
  • Redness or burning sensation
  • Reacts to new products

Face Washing Tips for Oily Skin

Oily skin benefits from consistent but gentle cleansing.

Best practices:

  • Cleanse twice daily
  • Use a gentle foaming or gel cleanser
  • Avoid harsh stripping products

What to consider adding:

  • Salicylic acid cleanser (helps unclog pores)
  • Clay mask 1-2 times per week

What to avoid:

  • Overwashing (more than twice daily)
  • Alcohol-heavy products
  • Stripping oil too aggressively can cause your skin to produce even more oil.

Face Washing Tips for Dry Skin

Dry Skin requires extra care to preserve the moisture barrier.

Best practices:

-Use a creamy or hydrating cleanser

-Wash once at night

-Moisturize immediately after drying

What to consider adding:

-Hydrating toner

-Barrier-repair moisturizer

What to skip:

-Foaming cleansers

-Hot Water

-Over-exfoliating

Your goal is to cleanse without removing essential oils.

Face Washing Tips for Acne-Prone Skin

Acne-prone skin needs balance, not harsh treatment.

Best Practices:

  • Cleanse twice daily
  • Use non-comedogenic products
  • Be Gentle

What to consider adding:

  • Salicylic acid cleanser
  • Benzoyl Peroxide (as a treatment, not necessarily in every wash)

What to Avoid:

  • Scrubs that irritate active breakouts
  • Picking or over-exfoliating

Consistency matters more than intensity.

Face Washing Tips for Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin benefits from minimalism.

Best practices:

  • Use a fragrance-free, gentle cleanser
  • Limit washing to twice daily or less
  • Patch test new products

What to skip:

  • Physical exfoliants
  • Strong acids
  • Hot water

If your skin burns or stings, simply adjust your routine.

Common Face Washing Mistakes

Avoid these common errors:

  • Using hot water
  • Washing too frequently
  • Not washing long enough
  • Sleeping in makeup
  • Using dirty washcloths
  • -Skipping moisturizer after cleansing

Cleansing should leave your skin feeling clean, not tight or irritated.

Building a Simple, Effective Routine

If you are overwhelmed, start here:

Basic Morning Routine

1. Gentle cleanse

2. Moisturizer

3. Sunscreen

Basic Night Routine

1. Remove Makeup

2. Cleanse

3. Moisturize

You can add treatments later if needed.

Final Thoughts

There is no one-size-fits-all answer for the perfect skin care routine. The right daily face washing routine depends on your skin type and concerns.

Focus on:

  • Gentle cleansing
  • Consistency
  • Protecting your skin barrier
  • Adjusting based on how your skin responds

When done properly, both your morning and nighttime face-washing steps work together to keep your skin clean, balanced, and healthy.
