BBL Hero vs. Traditional Rosacea Treatments: A Comprehensive Guide

BBL Hero vs. Traditional Rosacea Treatments: A Comprehensive Guide

Posted: January 2, 2025

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that affects millions of individuals worldwide. Individuals with rosacea often have redness, visible blood vessels, and sometimes acne-like breakouts. This can occur in all skin types, but the presenting symptoms may be slightly different in those with darker skin types. Rosacea flare-ups are often triggered by environmental factors, diet, or stress.

It is important to choose the right treatment to manage rosacea. Symptom management can improve the quality of life for many individuals suffering from rosacea.  There are more traditional options for treating rosacea such as topical or oral medications, but light-based treatments such as BBL HERO (broadband light) can also be used to effectively treat rosacea symptoms. This blog will discuss the difference between treatment options.

Understanding Rosacea and Its Challenges

Common symptoms of rosacea include flushing, facial redness (known as erythema), visible blood vessels and capillaries, as well as skin changes including thickening of the skin and pustules. There are different categories of rosacea and it is important to differentiate between the different types when determining treatment. The common types of rosacea are erythematotelangiectatic, papulopustular, phymatous and ocular. Again, it is important to differentiate which type patients have in order to treat them in the most appropriate.

Many things can trigger a rosacea flare. Flare-ups are times when symptoms are worse. This can be increased redness, increased pustules and even physical discomfort from the redness.  Common triggers include, but are not limited to: hot drinks, spicy foods, extreme weather, stress, exercise, hot showers.  It is important for people to be able to identify individual triggers so that lifestyle modifications can be made.  For example, if a person knows that heat is a trigger but they enjoy hot yoga classes, then they should opt for yoga classes that are not in a hot room.

Traditional Rosacea Treatments

Topical medications are some of the first-line treatment options used by dermatologists.  Below is a list of these common medications and the goal of treatment:

  • Metronidazole: Reduces inflammation and skin redness.
  • Azelaic Acid: Antibacterial, anti-inflammatory properties for papules and pustules.
  • Brimonidine: Vasoconstrictor, reduces visible blood vessels and flushing.

In other cases, oral antibiotics may be utilized to help treat rosacea. The most common is a tetracycline called Doxycycline.  This is often prescribed to reduce inflammation and breakouts.  It is most efficacious for papulopustular rosacea.  Drawbacks of using an oral medication include unwanted side effects, resistance, and the impact that long-term antibiotic use can have on the body.

Before the development of BBL HERO, other laser and light therapy was used to treat rosacea. This includes use of a Pulsed Dye Laser (PDL) and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL).  These helped reduce visible redness and blood vessels. These worked by using light energy to target the blood vessels to destroy them and therefore decrease the visible symptoms of rosacea.  Some of the limitations of these earlier treatments include the need for multiple sessions, discomfort during treatment, and increased downtime after the treatment was completed.

Lifestyle modifications are just as important as the other prescribed treatments. It is important to identify individual triggers so those can be avoided. Sun protection is also of utmost importance. Keeping a gentle and consistent skincare routine can also keep symptoms at bay.

What is BBL Hero (Broadband Light Therapy)?

BBL stands for broad band light. HERO stands for high energy rapid output.  BBL HERO is an advanced version of traditional IPL.  BBL HERO delivers light energy to the skin to target and reduce redness, blood vessels and pigmentation.  The light energy creates heat  in the skin’s surface which helps promote collagen products and decrease inflammation.

Although BBL HERO may work similarly to traditional IPL, there are some key differences between the treatments.  First, BBL HERO is a much faster treatment with greater coverage of the skin.  There is more precision and customizable settings for varying skin concerns with BBL HERO as opposed to traditional IPL.  Lastly, there is enhanced comfort and less downtime with BBL HERO compared to older technology.

BBL Hero for Rosacea

There are several clinical studies showing a reduction in redness, fewer flare-ups and improved skin texture following BBL HERO treatments.  Depending on the severity of symptoms, typically 3-4 treatments are required initially. These treatments can be spaced anywhere from 2-4 weeks apart.  During the treatment, settings will be customized to each patient’s skin.  There will be settings used that help with overall collagen stimulation/regeneration, redness and small vessels, brown pigmentation and even tightening/smoothing of the skin.

Goggles are applied to all patients, but the brightness of the light can still be somewhat startling. There should be minimal discomfort during the treatment and some aspects of the treatment almost feel relaxing like a warm massage on the skin.  After the treatment is completed, patients may experience more redness that lasts for an hour or so.  They should avoid anything that triggers their redness for 48-72 hours.

The benefit of using BBL HERO to treat rosacea over traditional treatments is that it is non-invasive with minimal discomfort.  These treatments provide lasting results with maintenance sessions required.  The amount of maintenance sessions will vary person-to-person, but in general we recommend 2-4 treatments per year.  Not only will patients have a reduction in redness and rosacea symptoms, but they will also be seeing improvement in pigmentation from sun damage, as well as an anti-aging effect on the skin cells.

BBL HERO can be easily customizable to each patient.  No two treatments are the same.  There is so much versatility with BBL HERO.  It allows us to address individual rosacea types and other skin concerns such as sun damage, fine lines and even acne.  It also gives us the ability to treat different skin types– yes even some darker skin types!

Comparing BBL Hero to Traditional Rosacea Treatments

When comparing BBL HERO to traditional rosacea treatments, several key factors highlight its advantages and differences.

Immediate Results

In terms of efficacy, BBL HERO offers a more immediate and noticeable reduction in redness and visible blood vessels compared to topical treatments and oral medications. Patients often report a higher level of satisfaction with BBL HERO because it provides long-lasting results with fewer flare-ups over time, as opposed to the daily maintenance required by topical treatments like metronidazole or brimonidine. Additionally, while oral antibiotics such as doxycycline can help control inflammation, they may not offer the same visible improvement in skin tone and texture that BBL HERO can deliver, especially in severe cases.

Minimal Side Effects & Downtime

One of the standout benefits of BBL HERO is its minimal side effects and downtime. While traditional light therapies such as IPL or pulsed dye lasers often require a recovery period with potential for bruising or prolonged redness, BBL Hero typically results in only mild redness or slight swelling that subsides within hours. This makes it a more attractive option for patients looking for a quick return to their daily activities. In contrast, topical treatments can lead to side effects like dryness, irritation, or increased sensitivity, and oral antibiotics may cause stomach upset, sun sensitivity, or long-term complications with extended use.

Value Over Time

Cost and accessibility are also important factors to consider. BBL HERO treatments involve an upfront cost that can seem significant compared to purchasing topical medications or oral antibiotics. However, when accounting for the long-term expenses of continually refilling prescriptions and investing in specialized skincare products, BBL HERO may offer better value over time. That said, multiple sessions of BBL HERO are often required to achieve optimal results, and patients need to budget for periodic maintenance treatments.

Choosing Based on Needs

Patient suitability varies between BBL HERO and traditional treatments. BBL HERO is particularly effective for individuals with moderate to severe rosacea, especially those dealing with persistent redness, visible blood vessels, or pigmentation issues. For patients with mild rosacea, or those whose symptoms are well-controlled with topical treatments, traditional approaches may be more appropriate. Additionally, patients who are averse to light-based therapies, or have contraindications for such treatments, may benefit more from conventional medications. Ultimately, the choice between BBL HERO and traditional treatments should be tailored to the individual’s skin condition, goals, and lifestyle.

Combination Rosacea Treatments: The Best of Both Worlds

There are times when combination treatments may be needed for a patient.  BBL HERO can be used alongside topical or oral medications for enhanced results.  If a patient is not on topical prescription medications, there may be some medical grade products that we offer here at Atalo Aesthetics, such as SkinBetter Mystro or Plated that can also help keep redness and rosacea under control.

It is important to remember that regular BBL HERO treatments, continued consistent use of a gentle skincare routine and lifestyle modifications can result in the best outcome for patients.  Rosacea is a chronic condition that can absolutely be managed well to keep flare-ups from occurring. Typically 2-4 maintenance BBL HERO treatments are recommended per year for lasting benefit. This will vary person-to-person.

Is BBL Hero Your Answer to Rosacea?

When you compare BBL HERO against traditional rosacea treatments, BBL HERO stands out for its superior effectiveness, comfort, and long-term results. It not only offers a more immediate reduction in redness and visible blood vessels, but also delivers lasting improvements with minimal downtime and discomfort. Patients benefit from fewer flare-ups and the convenience of periodic maintenance sessions rather than the daily application of topical treatments or the long-term use of oral medications. However, traditional treatments still have their place, particularly for patients with milder forms of rosacea or those who respond well to topical medications and lifestyle adjustments.

In deciding the best approach for managing rosacea, it’s essential for patients to consult with a skincare professional who can evaluate their specific condition and recommend the most suitable treatment plan. Personalized care ensures that treatments address individual triggers and symptoms effectively. Regular follow-up appointments are crucial for tracking progress and adjusting the treatment plan as needed to maintain optimal results. Whether opting for BBL HERO, traditional treatments, or a combination of both, consistent care and professional guidance are key to managing rosacea successfully.
