Beyond Wrinkles: Surprising Uses for Botox & Dysport You Never Knew About

Beyond Wrinkles: Surprising Uses for Botox & Dysport You Never Knew About

Posted: February 4, 2025

Neurotoxins like Dysport and Botox can treat a variety of concerns beyond the typical cosmetic purposes that often come to mind. These products were initially introduced to the market to treat eye issues, but were also found to soften lines around the eyes. This resulted in an improvement in wrinkles!

While treating wrinkles is the most well-known use of these products, they can also be used to treat excessive sweating, migraines, muscle tension in the masseters causing TMJ, and even the trapezius muscles. We can also use these products to address skin concerns like excessive oiliness, redness, or flushing. The uses for Dysport/Botox are seemingly endless!

Breaking the Sweat Cycle: Using Tox for Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis, also known as excessive sweating, can cause distress for patients. This can occur in the underarms, palms, feet, and on the face.  When products such as Dysport or Botox are injected into the affected area, the nerve endings that stimulate the sweat glands are blocked. This temporarily blocks the signal to sweat by blocking this message to the sweat glands and reduces excess sweating. For some individuals, the results of treatment can last many months providing relief for an otherwise troublesome problem.

Relief for Migraine Sufferers: How to Ease Chronic Pain

Migraines affect more than 10% of the population in the world. These can cause significant pain and disruption in one’s day-to-day life. Products such as Dysport and Botox can be used to help treat migraine headaches.

Typical migraine medications work by blocking the transmission of pain signals to the brain by interfering with messages that trigger muscle contraction in the head and neck area. Muscles of the face, scalp, and neck are often targeted for treatment.

Oftentimes, treatments are needed every 12 weeks.  Studies have shown that these treatments can significantly reduce the frequency and severity of chronic migraines for patients.

Tox for Jaw Tension and TMJ: Relaxing More Than Wrinkles

Jaw tension and TMJ affect millions of people in the United States. Symptoms include jaw pain, stiffness or clicking, headaches, neck or ear pain. It can result in jaw clenching and damage to teeth as well.  By using Dysport/Botox to treat the masseter muscle, we can address some of the tension. This results in decreased pain, decreased clenching and improvement in other symptoms. Depending on the person’s face shape and structure, treatment can also slim down the jaw line– an added bonus.

Trap Tox

Another common area where people experience tension is the trapezius muscle. “Trap tox” has gained popularity on social media over recent years and for good reason, too. The trapezius muscle is large, so the goal is not to completely relax the muscle but instead help decrease areas of tension.

By injecting Dysport/Botox into the areas of tension in the muscle, we can help with muscle knots, chronic tightness, and pain.  This can be used in conjunction with massages and other holistic treatments to help improve pain in the neck and shoulder region. Treating Excess Oil Production and Acne

If you’ve had Dysport injections before, have you noticed any skin improvements? Many will say how their makeup goes on more smoothly and their skin feels “better” but aren’t exactly sure why. Well, just as these medications block the signal to the sweat glands, they also block signals to the sebaceous glands.  When the product is injected superficially, it can reduce the amount of oil produced from these glands.  This results in a decrease in skin oiliness, smaller pore size and even improvement in acne.

Calm in the Storm: Botox for Mental Health Conditions

During the last ten years, there have been studies showing that injections of Dysport/Botox can have a positive impact on mild to moderate depressive symptoms.

By treating muscles that are responsible for frowning, such as the glabellar complex and even the depressor muscles of the lower face, treatment targets proprioceptive feedback from the face that can improve a depressed mood. Most studies are needed, but results are promising.

Droopy Eyelid Got You Down: Treating a Natural Ptosis

For some individuals, their eyelid could sit lower than the ideal position, resulting in a natural lid ptosis. This could be an area of concern for patients and can be treated quite easily with Dysport/Botox.  By targeting the small muscles at the lash line, known as the pretarsal muscles, we can help open the eye and achieve a more “awake” appearance.

Botox & Dysport as the Ultimate Multitaskers

As you can see, many other concerns can be treated using products like Dysport or Botox besides wrinkles. From excessive sweating and oiliness to muscle tension and chronic pain, there is a use for Dysport/Botox.  Many studies are showing the safety and efficacy of using these products.  If you’re local to Cincinnati, Ohio and have concerns that you feel may be treated with Dysport/Botox or want to learn more, give our office a call to schedule a consultation with one of the providers. You can also fill out our new patient inquiry form here and we’ll be in touch!
