Contour TRL, NanoLaserPeel, MicroLaserPeel: Comparing Laser Treatments

April 15, 2024

By now, you have probably heard us talk about the newest addition to our laser treatment portfolio (also from Sciton): Contour TRL. I want to give you a better understanding of the treatments that can be performed with this device and how the laser technology actually works.

Head to our treatment page to learn more about Contour TRL, MicroLaser Peels, and NanoLaser Peels.

What is Contour TRL & How Does It Work?

Contour TRL is the name of the handpiece. It stands for tunable resurfacing laser.  Because the device is “tunable,” we can target a wide variety of issues depending on how deep we treat the skin. This makes it an extremely versatile tool, offering something for all ages and all skin tones.

Contour TRL is a full-field ablative laser. Think of this as a lawn mower that removes all the tissue up to the set depth.  In comparison, Halo and Moxi (and even ProFractional) are all fractional lasers—meaning they only cover a percentage of the treated area more like an aerator creating treated “holes”.  With a full field laser, the tissue heals from the bottom up and, therefore, does take a little bit longer to heal than a fractional laser.

What Does The NanoLaserPeel Treat?

NanoLaserPeel by Sciton is the most superficial type of treatment with TRL. It is a great way to polish the skin and get a brighter, more even complexion. It is known as the lunchtime peel because there is little downtime.  The erbium laser removes the topmost layer of the skin (anywhere from 4-10 microns deep).  This can help reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and other skin imperfections. It is an excellent option for texture and creepiness on the face and body.

For the NanoLaserPeel, you may not even need numbing medication. Sometimes, the Zimmer chiller is enough. Feelings of tightness, mild redness, and swelling similar to a sunburn sensation are typical for the first 8 hours after treatment. It will take 1-2 days to recover— we recommend primary skincare products for a day or two.  Most people will have noticeable results in 3-5 days.  We can repeat these treatments every 2-4 weeks for a series of 3-5 for best results.

\What Does The MicroLaserPeel Treat?

MicroLaserPeel by Sciton is the next treatment option using Contour TRL. This allows us to penetrate the skin a little bit deeper and target sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles, enlarged pores, uneven skin tone, and pigment irregularities.

A topical numbing cream will be applied to the treatment area of a MicroLaserPeel. It is expected to experience tightness, mild redness, and swelling, similar to a sunburn after treatment. These results may last up to 8 hours.  Strict home care instructions will be provided. Because we are going deeper in the skin, you must moisturize the treated area— typically using Vaseline or Aquaphor. Depending on the depth, complete healing could take 4-7 days. This can also be done as a series to go over deeper wrinkles slowly over time.

Treat Deeper With Contour TRL for More Results

We are also able to perform deeper resurfacing using Contour TRL.  This can be especially useful around the eyes and mouth to target deeper perioral and periocular lines. These deeper treatments may require additional numbing through nerve blocks or ProNox to make it more comfortable for patients. There will be extended downtime, likely 10-14 days, with no makeup and only basic products. Patients should prepare themselves for slight oozing and scabbing in the areas. It is also normal to have longer-lasting pink in the area after initial healing. This indicates that collagen stimulation is still occurring and is entirely normal. That pinkness can easily be covered with makeup.  Deep resurfacing provides long-lasting results, mainly when appropriate skincare is used at home.
