Deep Exfoliation 101: How It Transforms Your Skin & The Key Ingredients—AHAs, BHAs, & Enzymes

Posted: June 16, 2025

Is your skincare just…not hitting lately? Deep exfoliation might be the step in your routine that you are missing! Unlike basic scrubs, deep exfoliation like BHAs, AHAs, and enzymes go beneath the surface to unclog pores, smooth texture, and bring dull skin back to life. Whether you are battling breakouts, rough patches, or just want glowy skin, understanding how these three ingredients work can completely transform your skin.

What Is Deep Exfoliation, Really?

Deep exfoliation is all about going beyond the surface to truly renew your skin from within. While physical exfoliation uses gritty particles or brushes to manually slough of dead skin cells. Deep exfoliation is going to rely on chemical or enzymatic ingredients – like BHAs, AHAs, and enzymes – that dissolve or break down the bonds holding your dead skin cells in place.

This process not only clears away dull, flaky layers, but also works deeper in the skin the unclog pores, stimulate cell turnover, and reveal a smoother, more radiant complexion over time. Scrubs can sometimes irritate or even scratch the skin, deep exfoliation is going to work gentler and more effectively, making them ideal for targeting concerns like, hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone, acne, and fine lines.

The Skin Benefits: From Dull to Radiant

When used consistently (and correctly), deep exfoliation delivers real, visible results. One of the first changes you will notice is brighter, more even complexion – thanks to the removal of dead skin cells that can make our face look tired and dull. This will also be great for unclogging pores, and clearing build up, it also helps reduce breakouts, and blackheads especially for acne prone skin-types. Plus, by speeding up cell turnover (which naturally slows down with age), deep exfoliation becomes a powerful ally in your anti-aging toolkit – revealing fresher, younger-looking skin underneath.

Ingredient Breakdown: AHAs, BHAs, Enzymes

When it comes to deep exfoliation, this “powerhouse trio” are the ingredients that stand out. These chemical exfoliants help you target everything from dullness to breakouts.

AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids)

Water-soluble acids like mandelic, lactic and glycolic works on the surface of the skin to dissolve dead skin cells. These will be ideal for improving texture, brightening dull skin complexions, fading pigmentation, and softening fine lines.

BHAs (Beta Hydroxy Acids)

These are going to be oil-soluble acids, the most popular one being salicylic acid, that can penetrate deep into the pores to dissolve excess oil and debris. Perfect for oily, acne-prone, or congested skin. This will also be good for reducing inflammation.

Enzymes

Derived from fruit like papaya (papain), pineapple (bromelain), and pumpkin, enzymes gently exfoliate by breaking down keratin in dead skin cells. These are going to be a great option for sensitive skin types that can’t tolerate stronger acids but still want a smoother, refreshed look.

How to Choose the Right Exfoliation for Your Skin type

Not all exfoliants are created equal – and the key to glowing, healthy skin is picking the right exfoliant that pairs well with your skin type. Here’s how to make the best choice based off different skin types:

  • Dry or Dull Skin: Opt for AHAs like lactic or glycolic acid. These will help remove flaky skin, boost radiance and improve hydration by drawing moisture into the skin. Lactic acid is especially gentle and great for anyone that has not used acids on their skin before.
  • Oily or Acne-Prone Skin: Focus more on using BHAs like salicylic acid. Since this is oil-soluble, it can dive deep into the pores to clear out sebum, reduce blackheads, and calm inflammation. This will be your go to if you struggle with breakouts and shiny T-zones.
  • Sensitive or Reactive Skin: Try enzyme exfoliants from fruits like papaya or pineapple. This will offer a gentler touch, making them ideal for sensitive skin that cannot handle traditional acids. Keep an eye out for soothing formulas with minimal ingredients.
  • Combination Skin: A blend of AHAs and BHAs can work wonders or try alternating the two on different days and on different areas. Focus BHAs on oilier zones and use AHAs on drier areas for balance
  • Mature or Pigmented Skin: AHAs like glycolic acid are great for improving tone and texture while fading age spots or sun damage. Bonus: they stimulate collagen production over time.

How Often Should You Exfoliate?

When it comes to exfoliation, more is not better. Over-exfoliating can lead to irritation, skin sensitivity and a damaged skin barrier. It is important to find the right frequency for your skin type and the strength of the product you are using.

Dry or Sensitive Skin

  • Frequency: 1-2 times per week
  • Best options: Gentle AHAs (like lactic acid) or fruit enzymes

I would suggest starting out once a week to see how your skin tolerates the product you are using. If there is no irritation you can slowly increase to twice a week.

Normal to Combination Skin

  • Frequency: 2-3 times a week
  • Best options: AHA/BHA or rotating between the two

This skin type can normally tolerate a moderate exfoliating schedule. Its best to use a mild one more frequently or a stronger one less often.

Oily or Acne Prone Skin

  • Frequency: 3 times a week or possibly up to every other day with a gentle BHA
  • Best options: salicylic acid or lower strength chemical peels

Since BHAs help control oil, and help unclog pores, they can be used more often. However, oily skin does need some rest from exfoliants as well. You can still irritate oily skin by over exfoliating.

Side note: if you over exfoliate oily skin, it can make your oil production worse.

Other High-Strength Exfoliants

  • Frequency: Once a week or less

Use only as directed and follow with nourishing and hydrating products.

Deep exfoliation isn’t just a trend – it’s a game-changing step that can elevate your skincare routine. By understanding the ingredients that work with your skin and using them consistently (but gently), you’ll see real improvements: brighter tone, smoother texture, fewer breakouts, and overall healthier glow. Sta
