Perfect symmetry—a feature of our face we are all striving to achieve but is quite rare to experience. Every person is created unique, and slight asymmetries between the sides of the face are very common. For example, some patients note one of their eyebrows raises higher on one side of their face than the other. Others also note their lips seem to be bigger or shaped differently on the two sides. Whether it be in your brows, lips, cheeks, chin, etc. there are many asymmetrical aspects of the face that are commonly experienced.
Our role in aesthetic medicine is not to fully correct these asymmetries but balance them. How do we do that? Here at Atalo, we can use neurotoxins and dermal fillers to help achieve our results. Read along in the blog below to explore how injectable treatments can improve facial symmetry, restore volume, and soften asymmetrical features.

Facial asymmetry can be caused by many different factors. Genetics play a significant role in the features of our face. We are all created uniquely and have distinct features that define us. In addition, natural aging, volume loss, and muscle imbalances can cause the face to feel and appear asymmetric. As we age we tend to lose bone, fat pads, muscle and collagen. This occurs throughout the face but may be accelerated on one side or the other. This can be due to sleeping positions, driving in the car, and other habits or injuries to the face.
For example, most patients have more volume and collagen loss on the left side of their face from driving and sun damage experienced through the drivers’ side window. If you also sleep on your left side, your chances of that side being more volume deficient is even higher. Facial symmetries can be present due to natural or external factors, but the goal is to create balance across the face as naturally appearing as possible.
One of the tools we can use to balance asymmetries of the face is a neurotoxin. Here at Atalo we offer both Botox and Dysport. Both of these neurotoxins have the job of relaxing muscles in the opposite direction they want to naturally move. For example, the muscle of the forehead called the frontalis wants to raise up high. When we treat that with a neurotoxin, the frontalis muscle is relaxed down and cannot raise with as much force as previously. Neurotoxins can help relax muscles on either or both sides of the face to create symmetry in movement.
Common asymmetries Botox or Dysport can address include the following: uneven brows or “one high eyebrow,” gummy smile or asymmetrical smile, jawline imbalances (masseter hypertrophy), chin dimpling or asymmetry. The neurotoxin treatments are temporary. Once they metabolize out of your system, additional treatment is recommended to maintain correction. Most treatments can last 3-4 months and have minimal downtime.
Dermal fillers are another tool that can help address facial asymmetries. At Atalo we offer Restylane hyaluronic acid-based fillers. These fillers are temporary and tend to last 6-12 months. The filler is injected into different areas of the face and can restore lost volume while also contour facial features. Areas commonly treated for asymmetries: cheeks for lifting and evening out volume, lips for balancing uneven shape or proportion, chin for correcting size or shape asymmetry, and jawline for refining contours and achieving definition.
One of our main priorities is to keep your results natural but noticeable. To give you the best results we like to combine several of these treatment areas to achieve that full facial balancing harmony.
For the before and after here, the combination of lip and chin filler helped make a big impact on overall facial symmetry. See more like this over on our Instagram!
Prior to injectable treatments it is best to receive a full-face assessment during a consultation. That way we can understand what treatments best suit your goals. All of these treatments can be personalized to reach your specific goals. Consulting with one of our licensed practitioners will provide you with a tailored treatment plan. There are some asymmetries than unfortunately cannot be corrected with filler or dysport, where surgical correction may be warranted.
During your consultation the provider will be able to set realistic expectations with you. As discussed previously, the treatments offered at Atalo are temporary. What this means is gradual improvements should be expected, with maintenance also being recommended. If you are someone who is looking to improve mild asymmetries while maintaining natural-looking results come see us to develop a plan for you!
Injectable treatments like neurotoxins and fillers are powerful tools for enhancing facial balance and harmony. Our goal at Atalo is to not change your appearance, but enhance your unique features while enhancing balance. If you are interested in learning more about how our treatments can best help you reach your goals, call us to schedule a consultation with one of our licensed providers. We can’t wait to see you!
