Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive topical treatment that rejuvenates aging skin by stimulating collagen and elastin production. Collagen induction therapy can reduce fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin texture while enhancing the skin’s overall radiance and firmness. It can be a helpful treatment for skin concerns including fine lines, pores, and pigment. In addition, microneedling can also be a great treatment for acne scarring.
Here at Atalo, we have a few tools to help with acne scarring, and microneedling is one of our favorites! Follow along in this blog to learn more about what the treatment includes, what to expect during the treatment, how many sessions to complete, and what aftercare steps are recommended for optimal results.

Microneedling is a topical rejuvenating treatment with minimal downtime. This treatment is designed to improve skin texture and stimulate collagen production. The procedure involves using a device equipped with fine needles on the tip. These create tiny, controlled punctures (micro-injuries) into the skin’s surface. Here at Atalo we use the SkinPen Microneedling Device, which is the first FDA-cleared microneedling device in the world.
The micro-injuries created in the skin stimulate the natural healing process: inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. This then forces the skin to repair itself by producing more collagen and elastin, which are essential for maintaining a youthful, firm appearance. When we have visible acne scars, sometimes it requires a physical mechanism to break down the scar tissue present. This helps make room for new fresh cells to appear. Microneedling aids in that process by the tiny needles penetrating the scar. These cause some destruction in the damaged area and allow new cells to form smooth, fresh skin.
If you’re looking for an added boost in your treatment you can also add on platelet-rich plasma (PRP)! This addition will help decrease your downtime and improve your overall results. Learn more about Microneedling with PRP over on our Instagram here.
Although microneedling is a clinically-proven effective treatment in helping acne scars, healing and skin regeneration is gradual. One session isn’t enough for optiomal scar revision. Microneedling triggers a natural wound-healing response in the body, which improves with repetition. It is a minimally invasive treatment with minimal downtime. Over time, the cumulative collagen stimulation will lead to visible changes over time.
Most patients experience results after one session; however, it is recommended that a series of three microneedling sessions are completed for best results. When acne scarring or specific skincare changes are expected it may even take more than the three sessions. Microneedling can erase a lot of acne scarring, but it will definitely require more than one session.
Microneedling also works wonders alongside other treatment modalities! In the before and after seen here, this patient had Microneedling done and was using Face Reality Skincare at the same time to help tackle her acne concerns. Look at those results!
As with many other treatments, there are several factors that may affect your individual microneedling treatment plan. Check out some of those factors below and how they may relate to your specific goals and needs.
After one microneedling session you will experience subtle texture improvements with a fading of acne scars. Once the redness and dryness has subsided you will also feel like you have a brightness and smoothness to the skin. Most patients require 3-6 sessions for noticeable scar reduction.
Deep acne scars may require more sessions or additional treatments such as lasers and topical products. As mentioned previously, adding PRP onto the microneedling session can also increase the downtime and improve results. If you are interested in incorporating other treatment modalities, chemical peels or the Halo laser can also be great additives for another treatment time.
When completing microneedling sessions it is recommended to space sessions 4-6 weeks apart. Spacing is important to allow full collagen regeneration before re-stimulation. For the full course of treatment, then, one should expect full results to take around 3-6 months.
Once we have completed your microneeding series it is important to continue consistent skincare including hydration, SPF and actives such as exfoliants and retinol. It is also recommended to complete maintenance microneedling sessions a couple times a year to maintain collagen products.
