One of the most common reasons patients see us at Atalo is to receive lip enhancement treatments. Among the most popular treatments to address this concern are lip flips and lip fillers. Although these two treatments sound similar, they differ in technique, results, and suitability.
Below is an in-depth guide and comparison of lip flip and lip filler procedures and how they differ in results, method, and maintenance. We also cover how each procedure works and recovery times. Let’s take a closer look at each option so that you can understand more about these two treatments and decide which might be best for your goals!

A lip flip is a minimally invasive procedure that uses Dysport, Botox, or a similar neurotoxin to enhance the appearance of the lips. The treatment involves injecting small amounts of neurotoxinin into the muscles surrounding the upper lip. This causes the lip to relax and “flip” or evert slightly outward. Doing so gives the illusion of a fuller upper lip without adding volume. This treatment can be great for you if you are someone who, when you smile or animate, feels like your top lip “tucks under” or “disappears.”
The procedure is relatively quick, often taking just 10 to 15 minutes, and typically requires no downtime. Results can be seen within a few days and generally last, on average, around 2 months. This option is particularly appealing for individuals who want a subtle enhancement, as it doesn’t add volume but emphasizes the lips’ natural shape.
Now that you understand what lips and lip fillers are let’s go through the main differences between each treatment!
One primary difference lies in the substances used. A lip flip used a neurotoxin like Dysport or Botox to relax the lip muscles, while lip fillers use hyaluronic acid gels to add volume. This fundamental difference influences the overall results of each treatment.
A lip flip provides a subtle enhancement, ideal for individuals seeking a more minimal look. Lip fillers, conversely, can create a more noticeable change, appealing to those wanting fuller and/or more hydrated lips.
Lip flips generally last around two months, while lip fillers last from 6 months to a year. This means maintenance schedules will differ, with lip fillers requiring fewer appointments over time.
Candidates for a lip flip often want a slight enhancement without the commitment of added volume. This can be extremely appealing if your top lip tends to invert when you smile or animate. Individuals looking for more pronounced changes or with thin lips may prefer lip fillers.
Both procedures come with potential side effects. Lip flips may cause minor discomfort or asymmetry. Some common negative complaints post-lip filler treatment include difficulty drinking from a straw, using your mouthwash, or eating your cereal. By relaxing the muscle around the lip, any pursed-lip action may feel weird post-treatment. Although there is a small risk of bruising with the lip flip, typically, bruising is to be expected, more so post-lip filler treatment. It is common that the lip filler treatment can lead to swelling and/or bruising.
A lip flip involves a few small injections near the border of the lip. Though this can feel like a pinch or may make your eyes water, it is an extremely quick and tolerable treatment. The injections of dermal filler into the lip are a bit more painful and lengthy, so we do numb your lips with either topical numbing or a nerve block prior to the treatment.
Yes! These two treatments have two different mechanisms of action and can be done in complement to one another. While lip filler can be great for adding more volume, hydration, and structure to the lip, it won’t change the action of the muscle. On the other hand, the neurotoxin or lip flip treatment won’t add volume or hydration to the lip.
By doing these treatments together you can maximize your results and get the lips you are looking to have!
