Microneedling vs. Lasers: Summer Skincare Treatments

July 1, 2024

Our most popular treatments here at Atalo include light and laser treatments. While these can be incredibly beneficial, there’s a time and a place. Out in the hot summer sun, isn’t it? When summer hits, it’s time to shift away from lasers and towards treatments that don’t require you to avoid the sun as much, like microneedling! Let’s explore the benefits of microneedling and why it is a better option than laser treatments during these warmer months.

Understanding Microneedling & Its Benefits

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, involves using a device with fine needles to create tiny micro-injuries in the skin. At Atalo, we use the SkinPen, the first FDA-approved microneedling device. These small punctures trigger the body’s natural wound-healing processes, stimulating collagen and elastin production during recovery. The result includes improved skin texture, reduced scars, diminished fine lines, and a more youthful appearance.

Minimally Invasive, Little Downtime

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure with significantly less downtime than laser treatments. Most people experience only mild redness and swelling for a day or two, making it ideal for those who do not want to disrupt their daily activities.

Effective for Various Skin Types

Some laser treatments are unsuitable for darker skin tones due to the risk of hyperpigmentation. Unlike those treatments, microneedling is safe for all skin types. This inclusivity makes it a versatile option for anyone looking to improve their skin health.

Enhances Absorption of Skincare

The microchannels created during microneedling allow for better absorption of topical skincare products. This means that post-treatment serums and creams can penetrate deeper into the skin, maximizing their effectiveness.

Natural Collagen Production

Microneedling promotes natural collagen stimulation without the use of heat or light. This natural approach reduces the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and other side effects of laser treatments.

Generally, microneedling sessions are more affordable than laser treatments. Given the cumulative nature of skincare treatments, the cost savings can be substantial over time. Microneedling is recommended to be completed in a series of 3 sessions, 4-6 weeks apart. We always recommend you visit us for a complimentary consultation prior to your treatment in order to give more personalized recommendations!

Why Microneedling is Preferable in the Summer

  1. Reduced Photosensitivity: One of the primary concerns with laser treatments in the summer is the increased risk of photosensitivity. Laser treatments can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight, increasing the likelihood of sunburns and hyperpigmentation. Microneedling, however, does not increase photosensitivity, making it a safer choice during summer months.
  2. Lower Risk of Hyperpigmentation: Heat generated by laser treatments may also sometimes lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, especially in those with darker skin tones or those exposed to the sun. Microneedling avoids this risk as it does not involve heat, making it a safer alternative for summer skincare.
  3. Easier Sun Protection: Patients must be highly vigilant about sun protection after laser treatments to avoid adverse effects. While sun protection is always essential, microneedling patients generally have a lower risk of complications from sun exposure. Wearing sunscreen and a hat is still recommended, but the overall regimen is less stringent than what is required post-laser treatment.
  4. Quicker Recovery Time: The minimal downtime associated with microneedling means you can enjoy your summer activities without long recovery periods. As we all know, summer schedules fill up quickly, making it harder to schedule treatments. Whether it’s family outings or outdoor activities, you won’t have to worry about the prolonged redness or sensitivity that often accompanies laser treatments.
  5. Complementary to Other Treatments: During the summer, many people prefer to undergo noninvasive procedures that don’t hinder their lifestyle. Microneedling can be easily combined with other treatments, such as PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapy or topical antioxidants and exosomes, for enhanced results while maintaining a low-risk profile.

“Very positive and welcoming environment. This was my first visit, I did a consultation. The nurse practitioner I saw was very thorough and helpful. She listened to me and answered every question I had. The staff was very nice, and everyone was great. Would definitely recommend!!”

Platelet-rich plasma add-on

Adding platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to your microneedling session takes the treatment to the next level! This add-on uses growth factors from your blood to further stimulate collagen production and help speed up skin repair.

While you’re numb for your treatment, we’ll draw your blood and spin it down in a special centrifuge to extract the PRP. The PRP will then be used during your microneedling session and penetrate the skin. Patients often find greater results using this method!

Microneedling post-care

Even though micro-needling is a safer option during the summer, it is essential to follow a proper post-care routine to ensure optimal results and minimize any risks:

  • Sun Protection: Always apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Wear protective clothing and hats when exposed to direct sunlight.
  • Hydration: Hydrate your skin with a gentle, hydrating serum and moisturizer.
  • Avoid Harsh Products: Refrain from using retinoids, alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), and other potent skincare products for at least a week post-treatment.
  • Gentle Cleansing: Use a mild cleanser to avoid irritating the skin and to promote healing.

As always, you will receive post-care instructions following your treatment, and it’s important to adhere to what’s listed. This ensures you get the most out of your results and experience a smoother recovery. If you’re unsure about a certain post-care step, contact your provider, and they’ll be happy to address your concerns.
