Microneedling with PRP: The Benefits of Collagen Induction Therapy

Posted: December 1, 2025

By now, we have all heard about Microneedling—one of the most effective treatments for texture improvement and collagen induction for the skin.  Microneedling has been around for decades and this treatment has been streamlined with advanced devices and regenerative serums to continually offer the best and safest results.  If you’re looking for a quick boost for skin complexion, microneedling with PRP may be the treatment you’re missing!

How Microneedling Works: Collagen Induction Therapy Explained

Microneedling is best known as Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT).  Microneedling incorporates a medical-grade device (the Skin Pen by Crowne Aesthetics) that contains small needles (10-20) in the tip.  The tip of needles pulses up and down into numbed skin, creating small micro injuries into the skin.  These micro injuries are vertical channels that penetrate down to the dermis, the layer of the skin where collagen and elastin fibers are located.  By creating this controlled injury in the skin, healing factors rush to the area of injury to fix it, ultimately producing collagen in the process.

PRP: Enhancing Your Microneedling Results

While Microneedling is highly effective at stimulating collagen on its own, the treatment is even better when paired with Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP). This combination treatment is one of Atalo Aesthetics’ most effective treatments for rejuvenating the skin. Platelet Rich Plasma is created from a simple blood draw.  The blood is put into a centrifuge and spun down so the plasma (the liquid gold color) can be withdrawn.  The plasma is loaded with platelets which are highly regenerative for skin tissue.  Not only does Microneedling with PRP help with overall skin texture, but it improves the skin tone as well!

Step-by-Step: What to Expect During a Microneedling with PRP Treatment

When arriving at the office for a Microneedling treatment with PRP, the whole treatment involces a handful of steps:

  1. Numbing: The first step is to apply numbing cream to the treatment area.  (We always prioritize patient comfort during treatments and have perfected our numbing cream over the past ten years!) The most common treatment area is the face but often patients will add other areas on such as the neck and chest.  The numbing cream ideally needs to stay on the treatment area for 45-60 minutes but this can vary from practice to practice.
  2. Blood Draw: While the numbing cream is taking effect on the skin, the blood draw will be performed.  The provider will then insert the tubes of blood into the centrifuge.  The centrifuge uses various speeds to properly separate the plasma from the red blood cells to create the PRP.
  3. Cleansing: After the skin is properly numbed for 45-60 minutes, the patient will wipe the numbing cream off and then cleanse their skin.
  4. Treatment: Once the skin is cleansed, the provider can start the Microneedling treatment. Since numbing cream is highly effective as an analgesic, the Microneedling treatment shouldn’t hurt.  It typically feels like a vibration sensation.  Some patients may even describe the treatment as a tickling sensation in certain areas, such as the nose.
  5. Red Light Therapy: At Atalo Aesthetics, we strive to always offer the best treatments, so we finish our Microneedling services with 15 minutes of medical-grade red light therapy. Red light therapy calms down the redness in the skin and enhances the results of the treatment.  Ultimately, a patient is at our office for about an hour and a half for the whole service.

How Often Should You Do Microneedling?

Microneedling can be done in a series of treatments or as a solo treatment.  I have patients who love Microneedling can do not do many other services in the office such as lasers.  Therefore, they will do Microneedling every 3-4 months as maintenance treatments.  Other patients may schedule it as a series of three treatments spaced out monthly.  If patients enjoy doing lasers along with Microneedling, we will properly space out their skin services throughout the year. One of the benefits of Microneedling is that it can be done in tanned skin, making it an ideal treatment for summer.  These patients will then do lasers during the cooler months of fall, winter, and early spring!

Minimal Downtime and Recovery

Minimal downtime is one of the best reasons why Microneedling is so popular. If you are looking for an effective treatment that rejuvenates the skin and comes with minimal downtime, microneedling is it!  Microneedling causes a sunburnt pink/red appearance for a few hours.  After this discoloration calms down, the skin may have a slight pink appearance for the following 12-36 hours.  Light flaking may occur on day 3 or 4 which is a great thing!  This natural exfoliation is dead skin being removed.  Dead skin is the top layer of the skin and acts as a barrier for the tissue.  By removing this dead skin cell layer, fresh skin cells from underneath are visible.

How Long Do Microneedling Results Last?

One question I often am asked specifically is “How long will results last?” This simple question is truly one of the hardest to answer.  Everyone ages at different rates, has different skin, exposes themselves to varying amounts of sun, uses different skin care products, etc.  As a provider, I have no control over many of these factors.  It is up to each patient to take care of their skin the best way possible.  The better the skin is taken care of, the longer the results from Microneedling will last!

Treatment Areas (Including Neck and Chest!)

The face is the most popular treatment area for Microneedling but it is important to remember other areas of the body age just as much as the face, particular the neck and chest.  The neck and chest are two areas that are exposed to the sun almost as much as the face and are not as protected as often.  I am personally guilty of this! I apply sunscreen every single day to my face but often do not apply sunscreen to my neck or chest.

Skin Concerns Microneedling Can Improve

Since multiple areas of the body can be treated, Microneedling addresses a long list of skin concerns.  We’ve already discussed the collagen benefits with Microneedling but let’s dive into the specific skin concerns patients may be struggling with.

  • Acne Scars: Acne, specifically inflammatory acne can cause inflammation in the skin resulting in hyperpigmentation or divots.
  • Fine lines: Natural aging and facial movement can both cause fine lines in various areas of the face.  My favorite area to target with fine lines is under and around the eye (the crow’s feet)!  This delicate area naturally has thinner skin so it is important to pamper it with all the collagen stimulation.
  • Dullness: Sun exposure is one of the biggest causes of dull skin.  Even, radiant skin is always a sign of skin health.  Microneedling can even out pigment in the skin and brighten duller areas.
