There are many skincare treatments or techniques out there that promise smooth, glowing skin. Among some of the most popular are skin slugging and HydraFacials. While both aim to give you healthier-looking skin, they use vastly different methods. Let’s break down slugging vs. HydraFacial, including the benefits of regular HydraFacials and why they might be a more practical choice over slugging for long-term skin health.

Skin slugging is a popular skincare technique that involves applying a thick layer of an occlusive product, like petroleum jelly or an emollient-rich moisturizer, as the final step in your nighttime skincare routine. The term “slugging” comes from the idea that your skin should look slightly “slug-like” or glossy after applying the occlusive. This technique is rooted in Korean beauty routines and has gained popularity because of its simplicity and low cost. People particularly favor slugging with dry or sensitive skin. The reason is that it helps to prevent trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) and locks in moisture.
When you apply an occlusive over your skincare products, it creates a barrier on the skin’s surface. This barrier locks in your serums or moisturizers’ moisture and active ingredients. This prevents them from evaporating into the air. The barrier also prevents external irritants from penetrating the skin. The idea is that your skin can better absorb the active ingredients when they’re sealed in, allowing them to work more effectively overnight.
Slugging, personally, would not be my first option if I was suffering from dry and irritated skin. With that said, here are some benefits some may experience:
While slugging has its benefits, it is NOT suitable for everyone. Applying an occlusive layer may clog pores for those with oily or acne prone skin, even if you’re feeling more dry, can lead to breakouts.
It also doesn’t exfoliate or cleanse your skin, so it may not address concerns like hyperpigmentation, dullness, or uneven texture.
Slugging on the rest of your body is a different story. If you are someone that suffers from dry skin on the body or have any skin issues that result in dryness or eczema, I feel there are high quality skin care products that can deliver the same amount of moisture.
One that comes to mind is Lipid Serum from Epicutis (pictured here). This serum only has 8 ingredients and is made with a gentle, healing formula. With therapeutic concentrations of TSC, Epicutis is an anti-inflammatory and silky serum delivers an instant dose of relief for dry, stressed, or post-procedure skin.
This can be incorporated into your routine as the “sandwich” method. Apply it after all of your skin care at night, even moisturizer, to help push it down into the skin and lock in all the moisture.
A HydraFacial is a non-invasive, medical-grade facial treatment. Using a patented Vortex-Fusion technology, it’s designed to cleanse, exfoliate, and hydrate your skin. This treatment involves a three-step process: cleansing, exfoliating, and then infusing the skin with serums tailored to address specific skin concerns. The HydraFacial process also involves gentle suction to remove impurities and dead skin cells. While doing that, its infusing the skin with active ingredients like antioxidants, peptides, and hyaluronic acid.
HydraFacials are generally performed by trained professionals in dermatology clinics or a medspa. They are popular due to their immediate results and minimal downtime. They are also suitable for almost all skin types, including sensitive, oily, and aging skin. So when we’re talking slugging vs. HydraFacials, one is a treatment performed by a professional and one is an at-home technique.
While slugging can be done nightly if your skin tolerates it, hydra facials are recommended every month for optimal results. Many skincare professionals advise incorporating hydrafacials as part of a regular skincare routine, as they provide a more thorough cleansing and rejuvenation that other treatments, including slugging, cannot achieve on their own.
While slugging can work wonders for dry and sensitive skin, it is not ideal for everyone. People with oily or acne-prone skin should approach slugging very cautiously, as the occlusive layer can trap oils and bacteria, leading to more breakouts. Additionally, if you live in hot or humid climates, slugging may feel too heavy on the skin and could increase oil production.
Not only do we trust and love HydraFacial MD treatments here at Atalo in Cincinnati, we genuinely see it as the better option when looking at slugging vs HydraFacials! Here are all the reasons why:
Hydrafacials offer a more holistic approach to skincare. While slugging is excellent for sealing in moisture, it doesn’t address other skin concerns such as deep cleansing, exfoliation, or targeted treatment issues like hyperpigmentation and aging. Hydrafacials, conversely, are a complete skincare treatment that addresses hydration, exfoliation, and targeted skin concerns.
Hydrafacials are safe for all skin types, including oily and acne-prone skin, which might not react well to slugging due to the pore-clogging potential of occlusive products. Since hydra facials cleanse and unclog pores, they’re better suited for people who experience frequent breakouts.
While slugging only seals in the products you apply beforehand, hydra facials incorporate a variety of active ingredients chosen specifically for your skin’s needs. The customized serums used during a hydrafacial penetrate deeper and address specific concerns, such as discoloration, texture and fine lines.
The result from a hydrafacial can last up to a week or even longer, especially with regular treatments. By keeping up with hydrafacials, you can achieve more consistent improvements in your skin over time, smoother texture to reduce signs of aging.
Slugging does provide moisture, but it doesn’t offer the instant, noticeable improvements in the skin texture and clarity that Hydrafacial provides. After a hydrafacial clients often report that their skin looks brighter, feels softer and appears more evenly toned.
A trained esthetician or dermatologist performs the hydrafacial treatment, ensuring safety and effectiveness. They can adjust the strength and type of exfoliation and serum to suit your sins specific needs, which is especially helpful if you are dealing with sensitive skin or persistent issues like acne and hyperpigmentation.

In reality, slugging and hydrafacials serve different purposes. Slugging is a low-cost way to enhance moisture retention, particularly in dry or cold environments. However, it doesn’t offer the cleansing, exfoliating, and comprehensive treatment benefits of hydrafacials. If you are looking for a holistic, result-driven approach that addresses multiple skin concerns, hydra facials are the better choice. They cleanse, exfoliate, hydrate, and deliver targeted nutrients to your skin in a single treatment, providing longer-lasting results than slugging.
If you’re serious about achieving and maintaining healthy, glowing skin, consider adding hydra facials to your regular skincare routine and reserve slugging as something to do to treat dry and irritated skin on the body or every once in a while for a moisture boost. With regular HydraFacials, you’ll enjoy the benefits of deep cleansing, exfoliation, and intense hydration. This leaves your skin feeling fresh, rejuvenated, and radiant.
