“All Natural” – it’s the rising trend in all things healthy, from food to skincare. We have also seen this rise in popularity, with more and more patients talking about using more natural products. But what does this mean? Are drugstore products good for your skin? Is natural really better?
We’re here today to answer these questions and break down exactly why your routine should have a combination of natural and medical-grade skincare products!

Kaitlyn Hunter: A lot of skincare products are full of bad ingredients. Anything you grab off the shelf – or even some of the more medical lines – have parabens, fragrances, and added dyes. These things don’t necessarily need to be in the product and can cause redness, breakouts, and dryness for a lot of skin types. Who wants to deal with those issues when you are using skincare that’s supposed to be good for you? No one!
Alison Clay: People are definitely trying to stay clear of chemical-heavy products and go for all-natural lines. As someone with sensitive skin, I also want to stay away from all those unnecessary, added ingredients. What are the worst skincare ingredients that people want to stay away from?
KH: The first is definitely parabens. If you go to a drugstore and walk down the skincare aisle, basically anything you grab off the shelf is probably going to have a paraben in it. For example, Cetaphil, CeraVe, Neutrogena, and L’Oreal all have parabens; just look at the ingredient list at the very bottom. It’ll say something like methylparaben or ethylparaben. These are used to prolong shelf life and prevent products from molding. If something is going to mold that quickly, do we want it on our face?
AC: Absolutely not! That just sounds crazy. What about fragrances?
KH: That’s probably the second worst thing that gets added. The ingredient list will usually say fragrance, parfum, or perfume on it, but companies can also be sneaky and use the chemical name of the fragrance.
AC: Fragrances are listed on a lot on products my friends use. I always try to steer them to more natural lines, because who has time to look up all those chemical names and figure out what’s good and bad for your skin?
KH: Exactly. I also recommend staying away from dyes. If a product looks pretty and colorful, something has been added to make it look that way. That isn’t natural!
Alison Clay: Absolutely! There are medical-grade products available that don’t have those ingredients in them, but people don’t tend to realize that. Medical offices like our MedSpa typically have skincare products that are actually pretty pure lines.
Kaitlyn Hunter: When skincare companies create these products, they only give access to medical offices to buy the products. This means the “good stuff” shouldn’t be listed on Amazon or online anywhere. The products in medical offices are more expensive for a reason: they have higher quality ingredients in them, which makes them safer for your skin.
Kailtyn Hunter: My favorite line is SkinBetter because it’s so pure. There are no added fragrances, dyes, or parabens. It’s even gluten-free and vegan! It’s truly just a pure, medical-grade line.
Alison Clay: I love Revision Skincare because it’s great for mature skin.
