As the chill of winter sets in, many of us find ourselves bundling up in layers to shield ourselves from the cold. But while we focus on staying warm, we often forget that our skin needs its own form of protection against the harsh winter elements. The drop in temperature, the increase in indoor heating, and the dry air can significantly impact your skin, leading to dryness and irritation. To keep your skin healthy and glowing through the colder months, it’s essential to tweak your skincare routine. While we can always help keep your skin hydrated and glowing with HydraFacials here in the office, let’s go through some at-home tips on how to adjust your skincare regimen for the winter season!

In the winter, the air tends to be much drier. Plus, with indoor heating cranked up, the moisture in your skin evaporates faster than in warmer months. A lightweight, gel-based moisturizer that worked in the summer might not be enough to keep your skin hydrated. Instead, you should opt for richer, thicker creams or oils that can provide more intense hydration and create a protective barrier on your skin.
Look for moisturizers with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides and glycerin. These help to lock in moisture and restore the skin’s natural moisture barrier, which is more sensitive in winter. If you have very dry skin, consider using an oil-based moisturizer, which can add an extra layer of protection against the elements.
When it’s cold outside, we often drink less water because we don’t feel as thirsty. But winter can be especially dehydrating for your skin, so staying hydrated from the inside out is important. Drinking water throughout the day is key, but you can also supplement your hydration with teas or water-rich foods like fruits and vegetables.
In winter, your skin is already under stress from the elements, so the last thing you want to do is strip it of its natural oils. Harsh cleansers that may have worked well in the summer can be too dry in winter. Instead, swap out your foaming or abrasive cleansers for a more hydrating, cream-based option that won’t leave your skin feeling tight or irritated.
Look for a sulfate-free cleanser with nourishing ingredients like aloe vera or honey to keep the skin calm and moisturized while still removing dirt and impurities.
While moisturizers provide surface-level hydration, serums penetrate deeper into the skin to provide added nourishment. Winter is the perfect time to incorporate a hydrating serum into your routine if you don’t already use one. Serums containing hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, or peptides can help draw moisture into the skin and repair any damage caused by the cold.
Hyaluronic acid, in particular, is a great ingredient for winter skincare because it can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water, helping your skin retain moisture throughout the day.
It’s easy to forget about sunscreen in the winter months when the sun seems farther away, but the truth is that UV rays are just as harmful during the colder months. Snow can also reflect up to 80% of UV rays, which increases your exposure, especially if you spend time outside.
Make sure to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every day, even if it’s cloudy. Look for a sunscreen that is hydrating and designed for winter, as it will offer additional protection against dryness.
Exfoliation is important year-round, but in winter, you need to be careful not to overdo it. Harsh exfoliants or frequent exfoliation can strip the skin’s protective layer. Instead, aim to exfoliate 1-2 times a week using a gentle exfoliant that won’t damage your skin.
Consider using chemical exfoliants like AHAs or BHAs, which are milder than physical scrubs and can help remove dead skin cells without causing micro-tears.
Winter weather can be particularly tough on areas like your lips and hands. The skin on these parts of your body is thinner and often more prone to chapping and cracking in cold weather. Be sure to use a hydrating lip balm that contains ingredients like beeswax, lanolin, or shea butter. Check out this Lip Shine from Colorescience too!
For your hands, use a rich hand cream throughout the day, especially after washing your hands. Look for products with oils like argan, coconut, or jojoba oil, which can help lock in moisture and keep your hands soft and smooth.
If you live in an area where winter air is particularly dry, using a humidifier in your home can help restore some moisture to the air and prevent your skin from becoming parched. A humidifier adds moisture back into the air, which can help keep your skin hydrated, especially in rooms where you spend a lot of time, like your bedroom or office.
While it may be tempting to take long, hot showers to warm up in the winter, this can actually be harmful to your skin. Hot water strips the skin of its natural oils, leaving it more prone to dryness and irritation. Opt for lukewarm water instead and limit shower time to 10-15 minutes.
After showering, apply your moisturizer while your skin is still damp to lock in hydration. You might also want to switch to a more hydrating body wash with ingredients like oils or glycerin to prevent your skin from feeling tight or dry.
